1967 Detroit riot
July 23–28, 1967 · Detroit, Michigan
23 to 27 July 1967: after a police raid on an unlicensed bar, clashes between African American residents and the Detroit police grew into five days of rioting, the bloodiest urban riot of the summer of 1967. Governor Romney sent the National Guard; President Johnson sent the 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions. 43 died, 1,189 were injured, over 7,200 arrested, and more than 400 buildings destroyed.
