1987 Lieyu massacre
The 1987 Lieyu massacre occurred on 7 March 1987 at Donggang Bay, Lieyu Island (Lesser Kinmen), when soldiers from the Republic of China's 158 Heavy Infantry Division killed 24 Vietnamese refugees on the shoreline, including eight children, five women, and eleven men. The ROC military officially denied the massacre and defined it as "accidental manslaughter", referring to it as the March 7 Incident or Donggang Incident. Despite cover-up attempts, the massacre sparked political outrage and partially contributed to the end of the 38-year period of martial law.
