Armenian genocide

April 24, 1915 – 1917

Systematic destruction of the Armenian people and identity in the Ottoman Empire during WWI, led by the Committee of Union and Progress. It was carried out through the murder of a million Armenians on death marches to the Syrian desert and forced Islamization of women and children. It followed the 1890s and 1909 massacres, driven by CUP leaders' fear of Armenian independence after Ottoman losses.
