Lee Harvey Oswald fatally shot President John F. Kennedy as his motorcade passed through Dealey Plaza, Dallas, on 22 November 1963; Kennedy was pronounced dead at Parkland Memorial Hospital, and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in aboard Air Force One. Oswald, a former U.S. Marine, fired from the Texas School Book Depository and was apprehended about 70 minutes later.
