Arab forces under Sherif Nasir and Auda Abu Tayi, advised by T. E. Lawrence, captured the Red Sea port of Aqaba from its lightly defended landward side on 6 July 1917, giving the Arab Northern Army a supply base for Allenby's Palestine campaign.
