Caroline affair

December 29, 1837 – August 9, 1842

Loyalist forces from Upper Canada crossed the Niagara River and burned the American steamboat Caroline, which supplied Canadian rebels. The dispute strained British–American relations until 1842 and shaped the legal rules on self-defence.
