Colfax massacre

White Democratic militiamen attacked Black Republican freedmen and state militia holding the courthouse in Colfax, Louisiana, after a disputed election. Dozens to more than a hundred Black men were killed, many after they surrendered. It was one of the worst acts of violence of Reconstruction.
