Demerara rebellion of 1823
August 18–20, 1823 · Demerara-Essequibo
Thousands of enslaved people in the British colony of Demerara rose against their owners. Troops crushed the revolt and executed many rebels, and the death in prison of the missionary John Smith fed the British campaign against slavery.
