Harlem riot of 1964

The riot broke out in Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant, New York City, on 16 July 1964 after police lieutenant Thomas Gilligan shot and killed 15-year-old James Powell. Protests by students escalated into six consecutive nights of rioting, looting, and attacks on police. The unrest left one person dead, 118 injured, and 465 arrested.
