Islamist uprising in Syria
May 31, 1976 – February 28, 1982 · Hama, Syria
From 1976 to 1982, Sunni Islamist groups, chiefly the Fighting Vanguard and after 1979 the Muslim Brotherhood, waged a campaign of protests, bombings, and armed revolts against Syria's Ba'athist government, seeking to establish an Islamic republic. The government responded with mass arrests and retaliatory killings. The uprising ended with the 1982 assault on Hama, in which government forces killed an estimated 25,000 to 40,000 people.
