The North Atlantic Treaty, also known as the Washington Treaty, is the founding treaty of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). It was signed in Washington, D.C., on 4 April 1949 by the United States, Canada, and ten Western European states. Its Article 5 commits members to collective defense, treating an attack on one as an attack on all.
