Operation Market Garden

September 17–25, 1944

Allied airborne and ground operation in the Netherlands to seize bridges over the Rhine and its tributaries. The bridges up to Nijmegen were taken, but British paratroopers at Arnhem were overwhelmed, and the plan to end the war by Christmas 1944 failed.
