On 8 February 1968, highway patrolmen and a city police officer opened fire on African American student protesters on the campus of South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, South Carolina, killing three and wounding 28. The shooting followed protests against segregation at the local All-Star Bowling Lane. It was the first instance of police killing student protesters at an American university.
