Poor People's Campaign

May 12 – June 24, 1968 · Washington, D.C.

1968 effort by Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to demand economic justice for poor Americans. After King's assassination that April, it proceeded under Ralph Abernathy; participants presented demands to Congress and then built a 3,000-person protest camp on the Washington Mall for six weeks, addressing poverty that civil rights legislation had not solved.
