Treaty of Wuchale
May 2, 1889
Italy and Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia signed a friendship treaty. A dispute over its Italian and Amharic texts, which Italy read as making Ethiopia a protectorate, led to the First Italo-Ethiopian War.
