Biography

Benazir Bhutto was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan's prime minister, who was overthrown by General Zia-ul-Haq in 1977 and hanged in 1979. She studied at Harvard and Oxford, spent years under arrest or in exile, and led the Pakistan Peoples Party.

After Zia's death in 1988 she won the election and became the first woman to lead a modern Muslim-majority country. She was dismissed in 1990, returned to power in 1993 and was dismissed again in 1996 amid charges of corruption, which she denied.

She lived in exile from 1998 and returned to Pakistan in October 2007 to contest elections. She was assassinated in Rawalpindi in December 2007 after a campaign rally.
