Malcolm X (1925-1965), born Malcolm Little and later known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, was an African American civil rights activist and Muslim minister who was a prominent figure in the civil rights movement until his assassination in 1965. He served as a spokesperson for the Nation of Islam from 1952 until he transitioned to Sunni Islam in 1964. He joined the Nation of Islam while in prison, adopted the name Malcolm X, and became one of the organization's most influential leaders after his parole in 1952.
