Mark Zuckerberg
American businessman who co-founded Facebook (now Meta) in 2004, which grew into the largest social network.
Biography
Mark Zuckerberg began writing software as a teenager and studied at Harvard, where in 2004 he launched TheFacebook with fellow students. He left university to run the company, which grew into the largest social network in the world.
Facebook went public in 2012 and bought Instagram and WhatsApp. It was criticised over privacy and misinformation, most notably in the Cambridge Analytica scandal of 2018, and Zuckerberg testified before the US Congress.
In 2021 he renamed the company Meta Platforms to reflect a bet on virtual reality, and it later invested heavily in artificial intelligence. With his wife Priscilla Chan he founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a philanthropic organisation.
