Biography
Muammar Gaddafi was a Libyan army officer who ruled Libya from 1969 to 2011. He led the coup that overthrew King Idris and set out his own political ideas in the Green Book, establishing the Jamahiriya, a state of people's committees.
He used oil wealth to fund development and supported many armed groups abroad. Libya was linked to terrorist attacks, including the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, and faced sanctions until Gaddafi gave up weapons of mass destruction in 2003.
During the 2011 uprising, a NATO intervention helped rebels take Tripoli. Gaddafi was captured and killed near his hometown of Sirte in October 2011.
