Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley

June 20, 1760 – September 26, 1842

British statesman who as Governor-General of India from 1798 to 1805 defeated Tipu Sultan and the Marathas and greatly extended Company rule; elder brother of the Duke of Wellington.
