Roch Marc Christian Kaboré
Burkinabè banker and politician, Prime Minister in 1994-1996 and President of Burkina Faso from 2015 until the military overthrew him in 2022.
Biography
Roch Marc Christian Kaboré was born in Ouagadougou in 1957, the son of a government minister. He studied economics at the University of Dijon, completing a master's degree in 1980, and became a banker; in 1984 he was made general director of the International Bank of Burkina, which he ran until he joined the government in 1989.
He was prime minister under Blaise Compaoré from 1994 to 1996 and became first vice-president of the ruling Congress for Democracy and Progress when it was formed in 1996. From 2002 to 2012 he was president of the National Assembly.
In January 2014 he broke with Compaoré over plans to lift presidential term limits and founded the People's Movement for Progress. He won the November 2015 presidential election in the first round, becoming the first non-interim president in decades without ties to the military, and was re-elected in 2020. On 24 January 2022 he was overthrown and detained by the army; he was released from house arrest in April 2022.
