Shinzo Abe
September 21, 1954 – July 8, 2022
Prime Minister of Japan from 2006–2007 and 2012–2020 (1954–2022)
Biography
Shinzo Abe came from a political family: his grandfather Nobusuke Kishi and great-uncle Eisaku Satō were both prime ministers. He entered the House of Representatives in 1993 for the Liberal Democratic Party and gained attention for a firm line on North Korea's abductions of Japanese citizens.
He first became Prime Minister in 2006 but resigned after a year, citing ill health. He returned in December 2012 and stayed until 2020, the longest tenure in Japanese history. His "Abenomics" combined monetary easing, fiscal stimulus and structural reform, and he reinterpreted the constitution to allow collective self-defence.
He resigned again in 2020 because of ulcerative colitis. In July 2022 he was shot dead while giving a campaign speech in Nara.
