Tôn Đức Thắng

Tôn Đức Thắng

August 20, 1888 – March 30, 1980

Tôn Đức Thắng (1888–1980) was a Vietnamese revolutionary who served as the second President of Vietnam from September 1969 until his death in 1980, succeeding Hồ Chí Minh — first of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and later of a unified Vietnam. The presidency was largely ceremonial; he was never a member of the ruling Politburo. Earlier he chaired the National Assembly's Standing Committee (1955–1960) and served as Vice President under Hồ Chí Minh (1960–1969). Known in Vietnam as Uncle Tôn (Bác Tôn), he died at age 91.
