Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden
Heir apparent to the Swedish throne and eldest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf
Biography
Victoria was born in Solna in 1977, the first child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. Her younger brother Carl Philip was briefly heir after his birth in 1979, but an amendment to the Act of Succession that took effect on 1 January 1980 introduced absolute primogeniture and made her Crown Princess and Duchess of Västergötland.
After secondary school at Enskilda Gymnasiet she studied for a year at the Catholic University of the West in Angers and, from 1998 to 2000, at Yale University in the United States, where she also received treatment for an eating disorder. She went on to complete training programmes in the Swedish government offices, the armed forces and the foreign ministry's diplomat programme, and in 2009 took a bachelor's degree in peace and conflict studies at Uppsala University. In 2024 she began officer training at the Swedish Defence University.
Since coming of age in 1995 she has acted as regent when the King is abroad, and she has carried out official visits around the world to promote Swedish business, culture and aid work. She married her former personal trainer Daniel Westling in Stockholm Cathedral in June 2010; they have two children, Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar.
