Biography

Volodymyr Zelenskyy was born in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, in 1978 to a Russian-speaking Jewish family. He trained as a lawyer but became a comedian, actor and producer; in the television series Servant of the People he played a teacher who becomes president.

He founded a party with the same name and won the 2019 presidential election in a landslide, promising to end corruption and the war in eastern Ukraine.

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, he stayed in Kyiv and led the country's defence, rallying Western military and financial support.
