Cambodia
State · Capital: Phnom Penh
Cambodia, officially the Kingdom of Cambodia, is a country in Mainland Southeast Asia with a population of about 17 million; its capital and most populous city is Phnom Penh. It declared independence from France in 1953 after being a French protectorate since 1863. The communist Khmer Rouge seized power in 1975 and ruled the country while carrying out the Cambodian genocide until 1979. Peace was restored by the 1991 Paris Peace Accords, and the country is now a constitutional monarchy, though the Cambodian People's Party dominates the political system as a de facto one-party state.
