30 November 1864 battle in which Confederate Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood's Army of Tennessee launched repeated frontal assaults on fortified Union positions under Maj. Gen. John Schofield, suffering one of the worst disasters of the war for the Confederacy. Hood failed to prevent Schofield's planned, orderly withdrawal to Nashville.
