June 1, 1831 – August 30, 1879

John Bell Hood was a Confederate general during the American Civil War. He built a reputation for aggressive leadership as a brigade and division commander under Robert E. Lee, but was severely wounded at Gettysburg in 1863, leaving his left arm mostly useless, and lost his right leg to amputation at Chickamauga. In 1864, at age 33, he was promoted to temporary full general and given command of the Army of Tennessee during the Atlanta Campaign.
