1 to 3 July 1863: George Meade's Union Army of the Potomac defeated Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, halting Lee's second invasion of the North. Widely seen as the Civil War's turning point, it was the bloodiest battle in American history to that time, with over 50,000 combined casualties.
