Siege of Vicksburg

Siege ending with the Confederate surrender on 4 July 1863, regarded alongside Robert E. Lee's defeat at Gettysburg the previous day as the turning point of the American Civil War. It cut off the Trans-Mississippi Department (Arkansas, Texas, and part of Louisiana) from the rest of the Confederate States, effectively splitting the Confederacy in two. Lincoln called Vicksburg the key to the war.
