Confederate General Robert E. Lee divided his smaller army in the face of a much larger Union force and won a major victory on 30 April – 6 May 1863, the principal engagement of the Chancellorsville campaign. The triumph cost the Confederacy Lt. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson, mortally wounded by friendly fire and dead of pneumonia eight days later — a loss Lee likened to losing his right arm.
