Army of Northern Virginia

The main Confederate army in the Eastern Theater. Named in March 1862 under Joseph E. Johnston, it was commanded by Robert E. Lee from June 1862. It drove the Union back from Richmond, won at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, was defeated at Gettysburg, and surrendered at Appomattox in April 1865.
