9 April 1865 battle in Appomattox County, Virginia. After abandoning Richmond following the siege of Petersburg, Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia retreated west to join Confederate forces in North Carolina; Union forces under Philip Sheridan cut off the retreat, and after a failed last-ditch attack Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Potomac.
