Constitutional amendment abolishing slavery and involuntary servitude in the United States except as punishment for a crime. Passed by the Senate in April 1864 and the House in January 1865, and ratified on December 6, 1865, it was the first of the three Reconstruction Amendments after the Civil War and ended chattel slavery in the border states of Kentucky and Delaware.
