Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign
November 1943 – February 23, 1944 · Micronesia
U.S. forces captured key atolls in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands from Japan, including Tarawa, Kwajalein and Eniwetok. The islands became bases for the advance across the central Pacific.
