Indian Rebellion of 1857
Major uprising against the rule of the British East India Company, also called the Sepoy Mutiny. Began 10 May 1857 as a sepoy mutiny at Meerut and spread across northern and central India. Suppressed by 1858; the British Crown took direct control of India on 1 November 1858, ending Company rule.
