Lidice massacre
June 10, 1942 · Lidice, Czechoslovakia
On 10 June 1942, in reprisal for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, Nazi forces destroyed the Czech village of Lidice on orders from Hitler. All 173 men and boys aged 15 and older present in the village were shot; most of the 203 women were deported to concentration camps, and the children were killed or sent away. The village was razed, making Lidice an internationally known symbol of Nazi terror.
