Three 1965 marches along the 54-mile highway from Selma to Montgomery, demanding African-Americans' voting rights against segregationist repression. The first, on 7 March, ended when state troopers attacked protesters on the Edmund Pettus Bridge (Bloody Sunday). The third, begun 21 March under federal protection, reached Montgomery on 24 March, contributing to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
