Sinking of the Titanic
April 14–15, 1912 · North Atlantic, south of Newfoundland
The British liner RMS Titanic hit an iceberg on her first voyage and sank in the North Atlantic. More than 1,500 people died, as the ship had lifeboats for only about half on board; the disaster led to new rules on safety at sea.
