Treaty of Portsmouth

Treaty signed 5 September 1905 that formally ended the Russo-Japanese War, negotiated 6 to 30 August at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. Theodore Roosevelt's mediation won him the Nobel Peace Prize, the first for an American. It recognized Japan's hegemony in Korea and awarded Japan the Liaodong lease, the South Manchuria Railway, and southern Sakhalin.
