1904-1905 war between Russia and Japan over Manchuria and Korea. Japan opened with a surprise attack at Port Arthur, won at Mukden, and destroyed the Baltic Fleet at Tsushima. The Roosevelt-mediated Treaty of Portsmouth recognized Japan's interests in Korea and awarded it the Liaodong lease, the South Manchuria Railway, and southern Sakhalin; Japan's victory made it a great power.
