Iwane Matsui

Iwane Matsui

July 27, 1878 – December 23, 1948

Iwane Matsui was a Japanese general in the Imperial Japanese Army and commander of the expeditionary force sent to China in 1937. Recalled to service in August 1937, he led Japanese forces in the Battle of Shanghai and ordered the advance on the Chinese capital of Nanjing. He was convicted of war crimes and executed by the Allies for his involvement in the Nanjing Massacre.
