Mass murder and rape of Chinese civilians and prisoners of war by the Imperial Japanese Army in Nanjing from December 1937 to March 1938, also known as the Rape of Nanjing. It followed the capture of the city, then China's capital, during the Second Sino-Japanese War; the dead range into the hundreds of thousands, making it one of the most documented Japanese war crimes of World War II.
