International Military Tribunal for the Far East
The International Military Tribunal for the Far East, known as the Tokyo Trial, was convened on 29 April 1946 to try leaders of the Empire of Japan for crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity during World War II. Established by proclamation of General Douglas MacArthur and modeled on the Nuremberg tribunal, it drew judges and prosecutors from eleven countries that had fought Japan. The trials concluded in 1948 with convictions and death sentences for the principal defendants.
