Benjamin Harrison (1833–1901) was the 23rd president of the United States, serving from 1889 to 1893. He was a grandson of the ninth president, William Henry Harrison, and a great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison V, a Founding Father. A Union Army veteran and a Republican, he won the 1888 election over incumbent Grover Cleveland by taking the Electoral College while losing the popular vote, then lost to Cleveland in 1892, becoming the first president succeeded in office by his predecessor.
