May 14, 1928 – October 9, 1967
Argentine Marxist revolutionary and a leader of the Cuban Revolution. He was captured and executed in Bolivia in 1967.
Biography
Ernesto 'Che' Guevara was born in Rosario, Argentina, in 1928 and trained as a doctor. Journeys across Latin America convinced him that revolution was needed against poverty and US influence.
In Mexico he joined Fidel Castro's movement and fought in the Cuban Revolution as a guerrilla commander. After the victory in 1959 he held senior posts in Cuba, running the central bank and the ministry of industry, and oversaw executions of former regime officials.
He left Cuba in 1965 to spread revolution, fighting in the Congo and then Bolivia, where Bolivian troops, with CIA help, captured and executed him in 1967. His image became a worldwide symbol of rebellion.
