Felipe VI of Spain
King of Spain since his father Juan Carlos I abdicated in 2014.
Biography
Felipe was born in Madrid in 1968, during the Franco dictatorship, the only son of the future King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía. He was proclaimed Prince of Asturias, the heir's title, in 1977 and swore allegiance to the constitution on his eighteenth birthday in 1986. He was schooled in Madrid and at Lakefield College School in Canada, studied law at the Autonomous University of Madrid, and earned a master's degree in foreign service from Georgetown University.
From 1985 he trained in all three branches of the armed forces. As heir he represented his father at national and international events, charities and diplomatic functions. In 2004 he married the television journalist Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano; they have two daughters, Leonor and Sofía.
He became king on 19 June 2014 after his father abdicated. His reign has included the 2016 dissolution of parliament to force new elections, the crisis over the 2017 Catalan independence referendum, and the COVID-19 pandemic, along with measures to make the monarchy more transparent.
