Biography
Gabriel Attal is a French politician who in January 2024 became, at 34, the youngest prime minister in the history of the Fifth Republic. He grew up in Paris, attended the École alsacienne, and studied law at Panthéon-Assas and public affairs at Sciences Po.
A member of the Socialist Party in his youth, he worked in the health ministry under Marisol Touraine before joining Emmanuel Macron's movement. He was elected to the National Assembly for Hauts-de-Seine in 2017 and acted as spokesman for La République En Marche. From 2018 he held a series of government posts: junior minister for education and youth, government spokesman during the COVID-19 pandemic, minister for public accounts, and from July 2023 minister of national education, where he banned the abaya in state schools.
As prime minister he led the governing camp into the snap legislative election of 2024, which ended with no majority, and he left office in September 2024. He then became leader of the Renaissance group in the National Assembly and, in December 2024, secretary general of the Renaissance party.
