France
State · Capital: Paris
France, officially the French Republic, is a country primarily located in Western Europe, with overseas regions and territories in South America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific and Indian Oceans; its capital and main cultural and economic center is Paris. Its metropolitan area's recorded history runs from Celtic Gaul and the Roman conquest through the Frankish kingdom, the Treaty of Verdun of 843, and West Francia evolving into the Kingdom of France. The French Revolution of 1789 overthrew the ancien regime and produced the Declaration of the Rights of Man, which expresses the nation's ideals to this day. In the 19th century France became one of Europe's most powerful countries and built a major colonial empire.
