Gulzarilal Nanda

July 4, 1898 – January 15, 1998

Indian Congress politician and economist who was twice acting Prime Minister of India, after the deaths of Nehru in 1964 and Shastri in 1966.

Biography

Gulzarilal Nanda was born in Sialkot, Punjab, in 1898 and educated in Lahore, Amritsar, Agra and Allahabad. He did research on labour problems at Allahabad University and taught economics in Bombay before joining Gandhi's non-cooperation movement in 1921. From 1922 to 1946 he was secretary of the Textile Labour Association in Ahmedabad, and he was jailed during the independence struggle.

Elected to the Lok Sabha in 1957, he held the labour, employment and planning portfolios and was deputy chairman of the Planning Commission from 1953 to 1963. In 1963 he became Union Minister of Home Affairs, serving until 1966.

Because he was home minister, he became acting prime minister twice, for 13 days after Jawaharlal Nehru's death in 1964 and again after Lal Bahadur Shastri's death in 1966, until the Congress parliamentary party chose a new leader. He left the Congress in 1971, received the Bharat Ratna in 1997 and died in Ahmedabad in 1998, aged 99.
